Historical Tour of old US 99
- Weldon Canyon
This photo shows US 99 in 1949. It is looking towards
the US 6 / US 99 junction. The freeway was built in 1954. This section of highway was
built in 1930 and was widened to a four lane expressway in 1951. In 1968, the freeway was
reconstructed to Interstate standards and realigned as I-5.
Weldon Summit in 1951. Looking South. Currently, the lanes visible exist
but the concrete is buried under dirt and asphalt.
Sometime in the late 1940's, passing lanes were
constructed at Weldon Summit. It may have been at that time that this segment of concrete
was bypassed. This is the last remaining uncovered stretch of the 1930 Newhall Alternate
concrete.
