Lone Pine, at 3733 elevation, was founded around 1865. It is the home of the first traffic signal on old US 6 since Mojave. Whitney Portal Road, the location of the signal, is the gateway to Mt. Whitney - 14,494'. It is the highest peak in the lower 48 states.

North of Lone Pine and the Alabama Hills, a short alignment of US 6/395 runs west of the present alignment. This roadways still has some striping and paving. It was bypassed in the 1940's.
