This road runs north-south from Castaic to Lake Hughes. It was built by the California Conservation Corps in 1936. This road can be broken up into three segments as shown in the photos below.
This photo shows the lower segment of Lake Hughes Road. This is very typical of the
alignment built to bypass Castaic Lake in the early 1970's. The old highway is underneath
Castaic Lake. This road rejoins the old road at the base of the narrows of Elizabeth Lake
Canyon.
Middle segment of Lake Hughes Road. After entering Elizabeth Lake Canyon, the road
narrows and curves sharpen. It is also a very scenic segment. Many campgrounds are
available alongside the road through this area.
Old bridge on the road. This creek is a great place to collect various rocks and
minerals. Minerals found here include graphite, epidote, and garnets.
End of the road near Lake Hughes. This junction is well signed and is one of my
favorite country junctions.
